American bakeries range from wholesale operations that supply restaurants to neighborhood shops that sell bread, pastries, cookies and cakes over the counter, and many of them also pour coffee. Bagel shops boil and bake on site and sell out of favorite flavors by late morning; donut shops open before dawn and are often family-run; patisseries and cake studios take custom orders for weddings and birthdays and usually need one to two weeks' notice. Ice cream parlors, gelato shops and frozen yogurt bars are seasonal in the northern states and year-round in the South and on the West Coast. Prices are posted per item, by the dozen or by the pound, and most shops now take cards and mobile payment.

Atlanta is in Georgia, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. Getting around Atlanta is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Georgia's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Their vegan donuts are made in the same oil as their regular donuts. I will never understand why restaurants continue to do this. I had bought one of their vegan donuts for my daughter who is allergic to dairy, eggs and nuts. When I asked if it contained nuts, the person was very nice and checked a binder and said no nuts. Great, I left but went back because something about the label that said “made with vegan ingredients” didn’t sit right with me. So I asked just to double check that it contained no eggs or dairy. She’s like oh I should have mentioned it’s made in the same fryer as the other donuts. I’m like oh well my daughter can’t have this then. She apologized. I’m like can you take it back? She said no. She half offered a refund and I said I feel bad I don’t know what to do. She just said sorry again and I said ok then thanks and left. I ended up eating it as to not waste it and because I paid for it. It was good, but unless I’m mistaken, a gluten free option wouldn’t be made in the same fryer (I’d hope). So why even bother offering vegan options if it’s not really vegan? It just makes it more difficult for people with allergies to navigate. Too bad this can’t be an option fo

Their 100 layer vanilla cream donuts are absolutely amazing! I pick some up when I come through Atlanta and take them back to Ohio with me.

I really enjoy Ponce City Market for a change of scenery when I need to get some work done, as well as for the chance to try something new. On a recent visit, I was looking for something that would be both tasty and helpful while I worked. I decided to go for the churro crunch donut and a mini cold brew. If I’m being honest, the food didn’t leave much of an impression. It was decent, but not something I’d rush back for. However, what really stood out was the staff—who were incredibly patient and kind. They made sure I had everything I needed while I worked, which made the experience much more enjoyable. It’s definitely a place I’d return to for the atmosphere and the friendly service, even if the food didn’t quite hit the mark.

This past Sunday, I treated myself to an afternoon delight at Five Daughters Bakery, located on the first level of Ponce City Market. Even with the crowds buzzing through the market, the staff kept things moving smoothly—I was in and out in no time! After a quick scan of the display, I settled on The Purist, Strawberry Glazed, and a Mini Shortcake. Each one was so good—soft, fluffy, and just the right amount of sweetness. The flavors were well-balanced, and you could tell they’re crafted with care. One of my favorite parts? The thoughtful touch of a Bible verse printed on the box—a small detail that left a big impression. If you’re ever craving a sweet treat in Atlanta, I definitely recommend stopping by Five Daughters. Your taste buds will thank you!

An elevated bakery inside of Ponce City. We ordered the hundred layered donut which felt like a rebranded croissant donut crossover. It wasn’t bad, the flavor and flakiness was good. Just wasn’t very special or exciting. I’m sure a lot of labor goes into making it which is appreciated. Though it’s difficult to determine if the atmosphere and pricing of the baked goods is elevated just because it’s located in PCM.
